A Teacher Who Climbs

Teaching is honorable profession that is why we have Teacher's Day. They are appreciated for their patience and dedication to the student to improve the education of one's country. There also instances where they become the inspiration of the students. Also many of them are unforgettable to their students due to their unusual beliefs, teaching styles or voices.

Last Christmas, I met my classmate during elementary and learned the environment of her job. She have less than 10 indigenous students in Kitakal Elementary School
locateed in mountain area in Mindanao. Her job as teacher is astonishingly challenging. Even before presenting the lessons, the travel going to her work place is a struggle. From Esperanza, our hometown she needs to travel for 4hours riding habal-habal. It is a modified motorcycle for public transport in the Philippines mostly in rural areas where roads are rough. Though it is starting to gain popularity in Cebu City.

The habal-habal travels in group so that they can help each other in time of engine malfunctions. The ride going to her workplace is very tiring. She needs to hold tightly the driver or her fellow passenger because the read has very steep slope. So steep that they are not allowed to have anything with them except for their own person. Their bags and supplies are on another habal-habal. They need to be very careful because the road is on the edge of the mountain cliff. They would take a rest after 2hour ride to relieve the mucles cramps and muscle pain. The hardest ride is during rainy days because the roads are wet and slippery.

The worst that she experience that had her cry because she was covered in mud from toes to legs. They had an accident, but thank God, there are no major injuries and damages. It is just that she plunged in the mud causing her to be covered with it on her entire lower limb.

Their quarter in the mountain is very humble. There is no electricity at all! They sleep so early every night with no entertainment. At night is so cold that she  converted her foam mattress to blanket.

But all these did not stop her in teaching. It has been almost three years since she started her work. I really salute her for her dedication and edurance together with he co-teachers.
